A linear equation is sometimes used to mean a first-degree polynomial function of one variable.

They are equations whose polynomial have their leading term with the degree 1. So  x^2 = x +3 is not a linear equation because the leading term x ^2 has the degree 2 and not 1. They are often useful in solving age problems and the like.
