The woman (Mrs. Luella Bates Washington) accomplished her kindness at the end of story by giving Roger (the boy who snatched purse) ten dollars to buy shoes,and by sending him off with hopes that he would be a trustworthy young man.
Roger was grateful to Mrs. Bates and wanted to say more than "thank you" for giving him the chance to be trustworthy.
