What is sedimentary rock? Sedimentary rocks are created by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the surface of the Earth, followed by cementation. The methods that cause these particles to settle in place are referred to as sedimentation. Sediment is the term for the particles that make up a sedimentary rock. This kind of rock can be made up of geological detritus (minerals) or biological detritus (organic matter). Weathering and erosion of existing rocks, or the solidification of molten lava blobs spewed by volcanoes, produced the geological debris. Water, wind, ice, and mass movement, known as agents of denudation, convey geological detritus to the deposition site. Biological detritus is made up of the corpses and parts (often shells) of dead aquatic species, as well as their feces, suspended in water and gradually accumulating on the water's surface (marine snow). Sedimentation can also happen when dissolved minerals in aqueous solution precipitate.
