x + y = 53   ------equation 1
3x = y + 19
y = 3x - 19 ------equation 2
substituting equation 2 to equation 1 you'll have:
x + y = 53
x + 3x - 19 = 53
4x = 53 + 19
4x = 72
x = 18
substitute x=18 to equation 2
y = 3x - 19
y = 3(18) - 19
y = 35
