Five years ago, John's age was half of the age he will be in 8 years. How old is he now?

let 'x' be John's age at present
since it was stated that five years ago is half of his age 8 years from now then you'll have the equation as:
twice John's age five years ago is equal to his age eight years from now
2(x-5) = x + 8
2x - 10 = x + 8
2x - x = 8 + 10
x = 18
therefore John's age at present is 18yrs old
