diamond is the hardest mineral because atoms bond in a network,with atoms bonding  to all other atoms surrounding them making the mineral strong bonded and hard to break .....oh and diamonds can only break diamonds :)

It is the hardest because of it's chemical make-up. It's made of carbon and carbon - atoms fit very well to each other.
