Bells are usually found in monk institutions. Monks consider ringing the bell an important ceremony. An old chinese saying goes "1 day being a monk 1 day you ring the bell".
Bells are also widely used during the China-Japanese war in northeastern china. Village people would ring the bell to warn folk people to hide on japanese millitary presence.
