Why is cobalt (Co) placed before nickel (Ni) on the periodic table of the elements even though it has a higher average atomic mass than nickel?

The cobalt put first before the nickel not because of atomic weight but because of  electron configuration cobalt is 3d7 4s2 while the nickel is 3d8 4s2 if you'll look at the table
