your dad got 3 ang i had 1.     
3+1=4
and there are 8 equal parts 
4/8 is equal to 1/2
The answer is 1/2

cake = 8/ 8

3/8 (dad) + 1/8 (you) = 4/8

8/8 - 4/8 = 4/8 or 1/2
     

*therefore 1/2 of the cake was left.
