mike wishes to cut as many  pieces of rope of equal length as he can from 3 strands that are 48 dm 60 dm and 72 dm long.If he wishes the pieces to be as long as possible and does not wish to waste any rope how long should he cut each piece.

This could be solved by getting the GCF:
48=2·2·2·2·3
60=2·2·3·5
72=2·2·2·3·3
GCF=2·2·3=12

So each piece should be 12 dm.
