Polynomial is a combination of more than two algebraic expressions combined by addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. It comes from poly- (meaning "many") and -nomial (in this case meaning "term"). Thus, Polynomial is many terms.
Non Polynomial is the term used if it is not a polynomial. Example binomial, monomial or others.
Polynomials and non polynomials have similarities.
The both have the following:
1. Constants
Polynomial
[tex]3 x^{2} +4y+x + 5[/tex] (5 is constant)
Non Polynomial
4y -10 (10 is constant) - it is also called Binomial
2. Variables
Polynomial
[tex] x^{3} + 2xyz^{2} +yz-6[/tex] (z,y,z are variables)
Non Polynomial
2a (a is variable) - this is also called Monomial.
3. Exponents
Polynomial
[tex]5 x^{5} +21y-10[/tex] (5 is the exponent)
- note that only positive integers for the exponent of polynomial)
Non Polynomial
[tex]25y x^{-3}+3c+7y+10[/tex] (-3 is the exponent)
