The length of a garden is 5 m longer than its width and the area is 14 m². How long is the garden?

Sagot :

let x = width of garden
then    ( x +5) = length of garden
area    =    length x width
thus
         x(x+5) = 14
           x²+5x =14
           x²+5x-14 = 0
            ( x+7)(x-2) = 0
             x =-7  or  2
             the width =  2 m
             the length = 2+5 = 7m

Length is 7 I just solved it in an easier way. Just used logic. 7×2 is 14. It is said that the length was 5m longer than the width. (7 is longer than 2 by 5 units) :)
