if I were Magellan I wouldn't denounce my nationality because a lot of people will grow angry at me, some would try to kill me which might start war against Portugal and spain. but if spain offered me a huge amount of money I (in Magellan's shoes) would be attracted at the money and denounce my nationality

well if I was Magellan, I would never denounce my own nationality, even if the cost of this dangerous situation is my life or ambition.
