The idea that only 40 wrote the bible is a means to justify it’s authenticity, however there are literally hundreds of writers of the books of the bible. Moses is pretty much a mythical person and didn’t write the first five books of the bible or Job. Some of the books are attributed to actual people that wrote them such as Ezra and Isaiah, but were added to or edited extensively in later times, so much so that biblical scholars refer to the authors as 1st Ezra, 1st Isaiah, 2nd Ezra and 2nd Isaiah possibly even a 3rd and 4th. Most of the books have unknown authors including the New Testament. About the only books that have an actual known author are 7 books by Paul (who ever he was), and Revelation written by a person named John (again who ever he was) both of these people have no historical record outside of the bible. We know that there are different authors for Revelation, 1, 2, and 3 John, as well as the Gospel of John.
