I would consider the situation of the man a "white lie”. The man pretends to be poor because he just does not want to brag.
However, I would not consider the things the girl said a "white lie”. The girl is poor but ambitious. She is a maid. The girl pretends to be rich to impress. Pretending to be someone else you are not won’t do any good.
