Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere and warm the earth. Without the natural greenhouse effect, the heat emitted by the Earth would simply pass outwards from the Earth's surface into space. During the day, the Sun shines through the atmosphere and it warms Earth's surface. At night, Earth's surface cools, releasing heat back into the air. Some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That is what keeps us warm and cozy at 14 degrees Celsius (58 degrees Fahrenheit), on average.
