The crow was able to get the pitcher of water within his reach because he used stones which one way or another would add up to the mass of the pitcher it self. Having a pitcher of little water means that it couldn't go off to the ground because of less weight. But adding stones would definitely help the pitcher go off the ground. It has something to do with gravitational force and mass.
