In similar ways, Competitive swimming is designed to be done in a pool of standardized length that can be easily built in a city. It could reasonably be called ‘competitive turning’ considering how much distance in a race is related to turns and the start. More than a quarter of a race in a 25 metre pool is related to turns. Ironically, the pushoff in a race is so hugely important, is the fastest part of each length. Nobody is faster as a swimmer than as a ‘pusher-offer’.
Just as both forms of TKD have self defense relevance, both forms of swimming are excellent for water safety reasons.
Comp swimmers will always be much faster than recreational swimmers, and also swim further and with less effort. The divide between non swimmers and rec swimmers is no larger than the one between rec and comp swimmers.
