Volcanic Lake
Lakes can form in the craters of extinct volcanoes. They are usually round and can be very deep.
Oxbow Lake
An oxbow lake starts out as a meander in a river. When the river finds a shorter course, it becomes an oxbow lake, cut off from the river.
Tectonic Lake
The great plates in Earth's crust shift and make depressions, where lakes can form. Lake Baikal, the world's biggest and deepest
lake, was formed in this way.
Glacial Lake
Glacial Lakes form where ice has carved dips in the landscape and then melted. The Great Lakes in North America were carved by ice sheets.
