When the length of each side of
square is increased by 7 in., its area is
increased to 189 in^2. Find the length
of the original square.

Sagot :

Let original side be x
New side measurement increased by 7:  x + 7
New area: 189 sq inches

Area of square = s
²
189 = (x+7)²
189 = x² + 14x + 49

x
² + 14x + 49 -189 = 0

x
² + 14x - 140 = 0

Solve by quadratic formula. This can not be solved by factoring because it has no rational factors.
