What is urinalysis?

Urinalysis is the analysis of physical, chemical, and microscopic characteristics of urine. Routine analysis (R&M) is one of the most useful indicators of health or disease, especially to detect or monitor renal and metabolic disorders.

Why is urinalysis done?

Kidney is the primary organ of the urinary system. They remove wastes from the blood by producing urine. Urine is used to check for health disorders. If urinalysis is done on a patient with a severe back and abdominal pain, they are frequently performed to check for kidney infection (pyelonephritis).

How is routine urinalysis done?

Diagnosis of pyelonephritis can be done using R&M analysis analysis.

Routine analysis consists of three steps:

Physical Examination

Physical examination tests the color, clarity (turbidity), and specific gravity (S.G.) of urine.

Chemical Examination

Chemical analysis tests the pH, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, nitrite, and leukocytes (white blood cells) of the urine.

Microscopic Examination of Sediment

Microscopic examination of sediment tests the sediment of the urine.
