A Ballad can either be a poem or a story. Originally from the country France they called it chanson balladee meaning dancing song. A type of literature that was actually made for dancing and like a song it requires rhythm.
There are many kinds of Ballads famously known.
For Example are:
- Danny Boy
- Beowulf (for some part)
- Annabel Lee
- Paradise
Explanation:
- Danny Boy, was considered as an Irish Ballad even though the writer was a British man. It was made in the year 1910, and was inspired by the tune of Londonderry Air.
- Beowulf, a classic literature, an epic poetry that was also made into a movie for its brilliance and balancing writing. Not all parts of Beowulf was considered as a Ballad just on some part.
- Annabel Lee, a Ballad by Edgar Allan Poe a great example of a writer. He had written it for his wife and cousin, complete with deep meaning and rhythmic stanzas.
- Paradise, from Coldplay the very young example among all that I had given. Originally seen and heard as music(only) but it is actually a Ballad.
These literary works are somewhat ignored as a “Ballad” some may just see it as plain old poetry with rhymes and measured stanzas.
