Mouth 4. Is the first part in the digestive system composed of teeth and the toungue.
Large Intestine 5. A large coiled tube attached to the end of the small intestine.
EXPLANATION:
The digestive system is made up of groups of organs that work together to digest food so it can be used by the body. It consist of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and the accessory organs that includes the salivary glands, gallbladder, liver and pancreas.
MOUTH
- It is the first part of the digestive system composed of teeth and the tounge. The tounge and the teeth are involved in the digestion of food in the mouth. There are different kinds of teeth and performs different functions in the digestions.
- Incisors - The front teeth with sharp edges for biting and cutting the food.
- Canine - The pointed teeth which grip and tear the food.
- Premolars - They crush and grind the food.
- Molars - The flat teeth used for chewing the food.
The tounge also helps push the food into the mouth while chewing. When chewing, the food is softened and moistened by the saliva from the saliva glands. Saliva contains enzymes that digests starch.
ESOPHAGUS
- The chewed food, which is now called bolus, passes through the pharynx and then to esophagus. The smooth muscles of the esophagus contract in a rhythmic and wavelike motion. This is called peristalsis and it pushes the bolus down to the stomach.
STOMACH
- Is a muscular baglike organ that temporarily expand to store food. As the bolus enters the organ, the sphincter muscle at the end of the stomach contract to keep in. The churning action of the stomach breaks down the bolus into smaller food parts. The bolus is also mixed with acid. Because of this, the bolus changes consistency. It is niw called chyme. The chyme is then pushed into the small intestine
LARGE INTESTINE
- In the large intestine, water from the undigested food is absorbed. The indigestible food materials is broken down until only the parts not useful to the body are left. These wastes will be expelled from the body in the form of feces.
SMALL INTESTINE
- It is the long coiled connected from the stomach. If it is stretched, it is about seven meters long. It has villi, small like finger projections that protrude in the lining of the intestinal wall to increase the absorptive area. The absorbtion of the nutrients occurs in the small intestine with the help of villi.
