Arachne is a mythological character who is the main character in a story about how or where the spider originated. In the story, Arachne the Weaver, due to her exemplary weaving skills became too proud and boastful, which caused Athena, the goddess of wisdom, to turn challenge her in weaving contest, which will be judged by Zeus.
Arachne lost and she has been forbidden to use the loom or spindle again. Thus, Athena made her into a web-weaving spider, one that could weave even without a loom or spindle.
