The sudden pull, when you pull it abruptly you do not create tiny turns you simply follow the cut that's already present between two sections. But when you tear it slowly you're manipulating it unknowingly creating tiny turns while tearing a section which leads to some excess pieces of tissue that isn't part of that section.
