The removal of organic matter and plant food from the top layer and its leaching by the agents of denudation is called soil erosion. Soil erosion is caused by running water on sloping lands, by winds over the drier areas and in sandy soils of humid regions, and by waves on lake and ocean shore lines. Soil erosion may be a slow process that continues relatively unnoticed. It may also occur at an alarming rate. As a result, it may cause a serious loss of fertile land, increased pollution and sedimentation streams and rivers.
