Sound vibrations travel in a wave pattern, and we call these vibrations sound waves. Sound waves move by vibrating objects and these objects vibrate other surrounding objects, carrying the sound along.
When people sing their vocal cords vibrate, creating vibrations in air molecules. The vibrations move through molecules as waves. These waves are called compression waves because the air molecules are compressed together. As sounds travel, we say the waves are transmitted.
