1. subject and verbs must agree in number
2. don't get confused by the words that come after the subject and verb, they do not affect the agreement
3. prepositional phrases between subject and verb usually do not affect agreement
4. if the subjects are joined by "and", they are plural in form
5. if "every', "one" or "no one" comes before the subject, it is singular
