Japan have 3 types of characters. Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragana. A phrase can mean 3 different things when read in these 3 characters. Kanji is a character which is exactly same like the Chinese. As for meanings, I think it should be similar because it is adapted from Mandarin characters. Hiragana and Katakana are original Japanese characters, which also contain Mandarin/Kanji characters. They are read differently, but again, it goes back to one root.
