Anton Mendel and Rosine Schwirtlich had Johann Mendel in 1822 in the Austrian Empire. He was the family's only child, and he and his older sister Veronica, as well as his younger sister Theresia, worked on the family farm. As he grew older, Mendel gained an interest in gardening and beekeeping.
