Mr. Santiago has a square vegetable garden with each side measuring 8 meters. If you add 4 more meters to any two opposite sides, what will be the new area of the garden?

Lets say the original square vegetable garden has the measurements of the side:
side 1=8 m
side 2=8 m
side 3=8 m
side 4=8 m

A=s²
A=64 m²

Now the "if statement":
side 1=8 m
side 2=12 m
side 3=8 m
side 4=12 m

A=lw
A=(12 m)(8 m)
A=96 m²

Since we add 4 meters to two opposite sides this would mean that we would form a rectangle so:
[tex]Area=length*width=8m*(8m+4m)=8m*12m=96m^2[/tex]
