Basically it's something describing the amount of time.
For example: They went out to get drinks. (This doesn't tell us how long it took them to get drinks. )
Example with adverb of duration: They went out shortly to get drinks.
other adverbs could be: forever, briefly, shortly, long, temporarily, etc.
